Pragmatics and Semantics

Many contemporary philosophical approaches focus on semantics. For instance, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).

Others take a more holistic view of pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which attempts to study the underlying of the processes that lead to an utterance being made by a hearer. However, this approach tends to neglect other elements of pragmatism, like epistemic debates on truth.

What is pragmatism?

Pragmatism is a viable alternative to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce conceived the concept, and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It was influential in a variety of areas of inquiry that span from philosophy of science to theology, but also found a place in the philosophy of ethics as well as aesthetics, philosophy of language and social theory. The pragmatist tradition continues to develop.

The core of classical pragmatism is the pragmatic maxim, a rule for clarifying the significance of hypotheses by exploring their 'practical implications' - their implications for specific circumstances. This leads to a distinctive epistemological outlook that is a kind of 'inquiry-based epistemology' and an anti-Cartesian interpretation of the norms that govern inquiry. The earliest pragmatists, however largely split over the question of whether pragmatism can think of itself as a philosophical system that adopts a monism about truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).

Understanding knowledge is a major concern for pragmatists. Certain pragmatists like Rorty are likely to be skeptical of knowledge that rests on'instantaneous experiences. Others, like Peirce or James are skeptical of the theory of correspondence, which states that the true beliefs are those that accurately represent reality.

Other pragmatism-related issues include the relationship between belief and reality, the nature of human rationality, the role of virtues and values and the significance of life. Pragmatists have also come up with a wide range of theories and methods in areas such as semiotics philosophy of language, philosophy of religion, ethics, philosophy of science, and theology. Some, such as Peirce and Royce are epistemological relativists, while others contend that this kind of relativity is a serious misguided idea. The late 20th century saw a revival of interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a number new developments. They include a "near-side" pragmatics that is concerned with the resolution of ambiguity, indexicals, demonstratives, and anaphors as well as an "far-side" pragmatics which analyzes the semantics in discourses.

Semantics and Pragmatics can be viewed as being on opposite ends of the continuum. On the side that is near, semantics are considered and pragmatics is located on the far side. Carston for instance claims that modern pragmatics follows at least three major lines: those who view it as an approach to philosophy that is reminiscent of Grice as well as those who are focused on its interaction with grammar and those who are concerned about the interpretation of utterances. Near-side pragmatics is thought to include such issues as clarification of ambiguity or vagueness as well as references to proper names, indexicals, demonstratives, anaphors and presupposition. It is also thought to address some issues that involve explicit descriptions.

What is the relation between pragmatism and semantics?

In recent years the neopragmatism movement has been focusing heavily on the philosophy of metaphilosophy and language. This has mostly departed from the metaphysics of classical pragmatism as well as value theory. Some neopragmatists, however, are currently working on an ethics of metaphysics based on concepts of classical pragmatism regarding pragmatics and experiences.

Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and others were among the first to introduce classical pragmatism. Both were influential thinkers who wrote many books. Their works are widely regarded in the present.

While pragmatism may be a viable alternative to the mainstream philosophical tradition of continental and analytic philosophy but it's not without its critics. For example some philosophers have claimed that pragmatism is simply an expression of deconstructionism, and is not really a new philosophical approach.

In addition to these critics pragmatism was challenged by technological and scientific developments. Pragmatists, for example, have struggled with reconciling their views on science with the evolution theory that was created by Richard Dawkins, a non-pragmatist.

Despite these challenges, pragmatism continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world. It is an important third alternative to continental and analytic philosophical traditions, and has a variety of practical applications. It is a growing area of inquiry and has many schools of thought developing and incorporating pragmatism's principles into their own philosophical framework.
